What Our Expert Scouts Say

Po Dog
May 02, 2013

Located next to the popular Radiator Battery in the heart of the hill Po Dog was the first to get around to offering up 'gourmet' dogs in Seattle. With nearly two dozen individual topping options and just about as many chef choice options there is something for everyone even if you don't eat meat.

Average hot dog at insane prices. What is all the fuss about? I had a Chicago Dog yesterday and was very excited for it. Too bad because it was basically a disappointment. The bun was good, and so were the toppings, but the hot dog was really very average! What's the point of "gourmet hot dogs" if they don't taste any different from me heating them on a pan on my stove? There was no taste or look of grilling. The meat itself seemed like good quality, but there was just no flavor to match. Fortunately, I liked the toppings a lot. And $7 for a hot dog? I can't believe there are even comparisons in the editorial review to Gray's Papaya in NY!! Not even close.

Hot dogs can be fun.. I am in love with po dog, their advertisments with the cute little weiner dog in a bun have been tempting me for weeks and I finally made it out. This is really nice restaurant in capital hill, I love the wallpaper with the guns on the well. Plus this food is fun, not only can you get deep fried pickles, you can also get a hot dog in a wonton wrapper. I personally don't like peanut butter on my hot dogs, but someone might, you never know. Open late. Lots of variety. Happy hour all day sunday. How can you go wrong?

Citysearch Editorial Review. Chicago has Hot Doug's, New York has Gray's Papaya--now, for locals craving a seriously gourmet hot dog, Seattle has Po Dog. The Capitol Hill eatery, tucked down East Union Street, is memorable in a way few hot dog shops are: the space is industrial and chic, with a Damask/revolver print wallpaper, sleek booths and a larger-than-life pixilated pug photo; the menu ranges from the basics (kosher or veggie dogs nestled into soft Macrina brioche buns) to the basically ridiculous (deep-fried bacon dogs, egg-topped breakfast dogs, wonton-wrapped wasabi dogs); service is worth the few extra bucks patrons pay compared to a boring walk-up stand. And where Hot Doug's and Gray's Papaya may limit you to fountain soda to wash down your salty lunch, Po Dog has Manny's Pale Ale and PBR on tap--a little bit of ballpark added to this otherwise unorthodox hot doggery.

Hotttt Dog!. UPDATE: I went back lastnight (Sunday). It apparently is Happy Hour all day. I got fries and chips for $1.50 each!! The chips were great homemade red potatos, just the right amount of salt. They offered me a plethora of dipping sauces, I tried the wasabi and Lemon aioli, both were amazing! Went with the Thanksgiving Dog (limited time offer I was told), it was really good and filling, not my favorite on their menu but it was a lot of fun trying something new. I also was told there will be a Chili Dog on the menu soon.... I'm thinking of standing in line tonight in anticipation! Thanks Po Dog!

I have been her three times since they opened last week. I tried the "Deep Fried Danger dog" bacon wrapped, deepfried, sauteed onions, and chili sauce on a Macrina brioche bun, the Pb dog... peanut butter and banana... I know.. but it was great. My most recent trip I had the texas dog with the chipolte field roast veggie dog.... now this was an amazing dog... the veggie dog added heat to the mix. Threw on some hot sauce and it was amazing. Finished the meal with fries now $2.50 (was $3.50) and larger portions! Also a mexican coke...gotta love them.... I'll be back at least twice a week for lunch, beats fast food or subway. Also I'm sure I will wander in Fri or sat at 2 am and be that guy... but atleast get a gourmet dog out of the deal!
