When the sun is out, get there right when the doors open for happy hour and head to the back patio for a beer and a view of the Needle. When it's dark and rainy, hunker down inside and take the chill off with some comfort food (like the baked Mac & Cheese) and two fingers of Knob Creek.

Chicken & Waffles and whiskey (and oddly salads) keep me coming back to this cozy joint. Friendly barkeeps and a large deck make it a perfect stop during the twice daily happy hour 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. - midnight.

Southern flair and strong drinks. On a side street in Capitol Hill, Captain Black's slings booze and bar food that will have you doing a double-take at the menu. Fried-to-order chicken with waffles and syrup, bubbling mac n' cheese, deep-fried cheese curds and an array of po'boys make this saloon a worthy stop for late-night bites. The inside can veer toward cramped, but the expansive outdoor patio space more than makes up for it when the weather cooperates.
