Tips for Marjorie

September 27, 2010

Citysearch Editorial Review. The original Marjorie was housed in an eclectic blue-walled space in Belltown, and offered simple and delicious everyday dishes to a rowdy, late-night partying crowd. After an 18-month closure, the new Marjorie re-opened in a quiet, residential area of Capitol Hill in 2010. The revamped menu features slightly higher-end and more refined dishes, owing to the new kitchen crew—rumored to be largely culled from award-winning Spanish eatery Harvest Vine. Silky duck liver paté with honeyed brioche, Spanish mackerel with piquillo peppers and golden raisins, and jumbo blue prawns served atop grits and housemade tasso ham are just a few of the sumptuous, perfectly shareable plates. Holdovers from the original Marjorie? This reincarnation happily features the same great bartender (Ben), and the same cheery blue walls. Other than that, this Marjorie’s grown up—but then again, so have you.

A neighborhood gem in a jewel box space. Marjorie's new Capitol Hill spot offers an eclectic menu with the Caribbean influences that made her Belltown original so popular (don't worry, the plantain chips are still on the menu).

Small plates like hamachi crudo and house-made terrine are eminently sharable, but it's such a pleasure to sit at the bar, savor the cocktail and soak up the charm of Marjorie's glass walls.

A few larger items approach the $20 mark, but most hover around $12 or less. I'm sure Marjorie will be wonderful in colder months, but this is a restaurant made for summer and fall in Seattle.

Marjorie: not for everyone, but it should be. The new Marjorie on Capitol Hill is not for everyone, but it should be! This restaurant is what urban neighborhood dining is all about. If the thought of seeing a mother breast feed or having to watch an adult invoke 'play time' with a child while in a restaurant doesn't appeal to you, then this may not be the right place for you. However, if you can put judgment aside, allow people to be who they are, and have a truly amazing experience, then you should go to Marjorie.

Lest you get the wrong impression, this is not a kid-friendly restaurant by design. The food, atmosphere and music are very sophisticated. It just so happens that it is a relaxed sophistication, just the right mix of casual attention to detail that makes this place ideal for everyone.

The staff is superb: attentive, knowledgeable and honest. Chef Kylen McCarthy is supremely talented in pairing the unusual to create a truly eclectic menu. The cucumber soup, while looking nothing like soup, is exquisite. The Charcuterie Plate which includes house made terrines and pates is the best I've had. A delicate piece of Spanish Mackerel is beautifully complemented with baby turnips, pearl onions, and braised beef ribs. Delicious!

Ben, the bartender, is rumored to mix the best Vesper in town but in my experience he's also makes a really great Martini. Sit at the bar, watch the kitchen and Ben will tell you about the different plates coming out if you ask.

Do you like bread pudding? Well, Taylor Cheney, the pastry chef, sure knows how to do it right. All her desserts are fantastic!

Donna, the proprietor who doubles as hostess and server alongside Jarod and others, attends to every detail. Her signature turn table is in the washroom with a selection of records for you to choose from. Go on! Try it!
