What Our Expert Scouts Say

The Walrus and the Carpenter
March 13, 2013

Oysters get top billing at this sleek, yet cozy spot - and for good reason. Get there early before the joint fills up to enjoy Happy Hour prices as well as some coveted elbow room.

A gorgeous room that serves food to match. Fish, shellfish & salads standout. Happy hour 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday - Thursday is a particularly wise time to visit.

The freshest tastiest oysters in town! But enough on the menu to please even non-bivalve loving folks!

THE place to go for fresh oysters and all-around beautiful atmosphere...IF you can snag a seat. Busiest during oyster happy hour at 4p, but totally worth the experience if you're up for a bit of a wait.

Tips for The Walrus and the Carpenter

January 15, 2013

Skip a trip to Paris and head to Seattle's most beautiful spot to slurp oysters, drink glasses of rose or bubbly and feast on market driven cuisine. Their steak tartare with a farm fresh egg is perfection. Try bellying up to the bar on a Monday or a Tuesday after 8pm.

Re: Best New Restaurant in a Long Time. Went to the Walrus and the Carpenter the other night for happy hour and it was excellent. Big oyster fan and they were stored and served at the perfect temperature. The sardines with an apple slaw, anchovy crostini, and steak tartare were spot on. Perfect texture on the tartare, did sprinkle a little salt on for crunch. Reasonably priced wine list with good selections. Cozy attractive space. We were lucky; the sun was shining through the back doors.

Only suggestion, the place was very busy and the staff were professional, friendly, funny but they seemed stressed. Like they could use one more set of hands out front.

Will be back for many more happy hours. Thanks, for the carefully and beautifully prepared, thoughful, deeply flavored food and perfectly chilled oysters.

WOW. AMAZING FOOD>

The place is a bit small but it only adds to the charm. Love the french charm. The plates are perfectly sized and presented. We had an assortment of oysters and I then had the smoke trout with lentils, so perfect.

A trek for a Bellevue Girl but well worth it if you can snag a parking spot

Charming Oyster Bar in Ballard. The Walrus and the Carpenter is a charming little bar in the one place left in Ballard where you can actually find a parking spot. Its the perfect spot for oysters, a couple of appetizers and champagne cocktails. Don't go expecting a full meal (unless you want to burn through everything on the fairly expsensive menu!) It is absolutely worth the trip to Ballard. The service is great, the atmosphere is lovely and don't be fooled by stumbling into Staple + Fancy by mistake. The Walrus Bar is behind that restuarant, down the hall.
