What Our Expert Scouts Say

Big Mario's Pizza
March 30, 2013

Slice heaven! Gimme a cheese, please, and a Stella on tap, so I can take a seat among the Cap Hill hipsters and fold said slice and cram it down my pie hole. Thin crust, red sauce, the right amount of mozzarella adds up to slice heaven!

Big, foldable slices from lunch until late night. An afternoon at the bar might result in watching The Lost Boys on VHS.

Tips for Big Mario's Pizza

August 25, 2012

Loved their pizza and I ate it at the bar, which admittedly felt a little weird, since I was there by myself. Pretty hipster, so good for young adults, bad for families and I had a stroller, no way would this be a good place to bring it to. That's why I like it. :) It's really more of a bar.

Citysearch Editorial Review. Doing pizza—even doing it well—is nothing terribly special in Seattle. Yet this NY-style pizzeria in the heart of Capitol Hill is the sort of place you feel yourself drawn back to, not just for the post-last-call slice of combo, but for the Cheers-like back bar area where unexpectedly friendly bartenders sling everything (from 40-ounce-bottles of Olde E to Grey Goose martinis) to the tattooed regulars in mesh trucker hats that fill the red vinyl booths or perch on stools. The pizza here—thin-crusted, sparsely topped and sliced so big you have to do the requisite fold in half to get it in your face—is good enough, and can be ordered by the slice or whole pie, to take away or enjoy there; but the bar is better. Our advice? Grab a slice and a stool in back, order a drink (beers on tap range from locally produced favorites from Maritime Pacific Brewing Co. and Hales Ales to the obligatory Miller High Life), and enjoy the vibe: a mix of Sonic Youth-fueled hipster hangout and down-to-earth dive bar.
