Bothell >Preservation Kitchen
I've been here twice now. It took me a lot to go back the 2nd time, but I thought it was fair to give it another try, but was I wrong! The second time was equally as bad as the first. The first time was with a group of friends and while the second time was similar, I also had my 3 year old with me. Both times service was slow, servers didn't know much about the menu or if items (like soup) were vegetarian, and it was way overpriced for what we got. My veg friend had basically no options.
Here are some other issues:
--seriously? I have to pay for bread and butter? shouldn't that just come free with the meal like all other restaurants that charge the same kind of prices?? Wow! Talk about nickled and dimed! The cabernet butter--it just takes like butter. Don't fall for it.
--They have a children's menu, which is nice. I ordered simple grilled cheese and it was burnt! Can you believe the kitchen sent out burnt grilled cheese? Hasn't the chef ever watched a Gordon Ramsay show? How easy and cheap is that to re-make?? The burnt side was down on the plate so it was clear they were trying to hide it visually so knew it was burnt, but the taste was really burnt. Sheesh!
--The children's menu, yeah..nice touch...but the grilled cheese came with fries only. No fruit, no veggies. Even Red Robin knows to put that on a plate for a kid!
--I asked the server for a straw and he brought it out in his bare hands. That's fine at MacDonalds (they're in paper anyway there), but at a restaurant that's trying to be more upper-class, I would expect the server to bring it on a napkin at least.
--Service was slow and the waiter had no idea how to divide up the bill. The first time this happened, too, and the waiter had his nose in the air the whole time. Reality check--you're not downtown at a 5-star. You're in Bothell.
--My friends and I went after work so were there fairly early, yet we still had to wait about 10 min for a table in an empty restaurant.
There are many other complaints I have, but you probably get the gist with the low rating and issues above.
I live really close to this restaurant and am an avid supporter of local, small businesses. I was really happy when it opened, but after 2 tries, I'm done.
Absinthe Makes My Head Go-Round.
My husband and I dined at Preservation Kitchen this past Saturday. We live close by and like to support local Bothell restaurants. My husband has been dying to try Absinthe and PK is one of the few places that serves this in their bar. I tried the 'Obituary Cocktail' and understood the next morning why it was so aptly named as I scanned the Sunday paper for mine.
Onwards....the overall atmosphere was underwhelming. The contemporary furnishings are nice but is it so hard to throw on some nice white linens? We were greeted by a server that seemed as if he was a Microsoft moonlighter- this geek had no personality. The food: Appetizers were phenomenal. The duck was fabulous. I had to have my pork loin cooked a bit more but otherwise a nice dish.
Thankfully, they ended on a high note with dessert that saved this experience. The owner should hug his pastry/dessert chef and buy them a week in the Bahamas just for their ability to bake! The chocolate torte with sea salt caramel sauce was out of this world and sent me there at least for a minute. My husband had the cheesecake and had his own mini-experience.
Overall we give PK a 7 out of 10 - it's worth a shot but not worth the money if they fall short.
Rude and not accommodating.
Because of my celiac (no gluten) and IBD we never eat out because I feel like I'm a pain with my special requests. Eating with others is such an important social experience and everyone should have the right to a good meal together with family/friends. I emailed Preservation Kitchen that we wanted to come for my birthday, a very special treat since we never dine out, and could they accommodate me? I gave them a clear list of what foods I could and could not eat and was reassured that we would be taken care of.
Well, I was served something I can't eat and when we told the owner I couldn't eat it, she accused me of being wrong and that I was the one confused about what was on my plate. She wasn't polite about it and embarrassed me in front of everyone we were with. It ruined the entire experience not to mention I left hungry. Very frustrating because asking for a simple fish and steamed veggies doesn't seem like a hard request.
Not to mention the servings were very small for the high price they come at.
Avoid unless you want to be there all night, broke & hungry. Disappointing night... I had my 34th Birthday party at Preservation Kitchen last night with 8 family members & they struck out big time! 1st they gave us 20 minutes looking at the wrong menus & we all had to change our orders. Then we had to wait not only 1 hour but 1 hour and 40 minutes for the food & the portions were FAR TO SMALL for their prices, and the food was only okay. Plus they were out of chicken & we'd ordered 5 orders so half of us had to change our order AGAIN. (they told us this an hour after we ordered. Wouldn't the kitchen have figured this out sooner? We asked twice for some music because it was dead silent upstairs in the room we'd reserved for our party of 10. Then they messed up the charges on 2 of our bills & that took 30 minutes to clear up. The waiter was new, slow & horrible. Who knew it would be a disaster & we'd be there 3 hours. I was embarrassed that I'd chosen such an over-priced, overrated, SLOW, horrible serviced establishment. If I ever returned there it would only be to the bar for their drinks (which are $10 on average). Was great company though. Thanks family for coming out for the eventful night! Also I asked for the Owner & they never came out of the Kitchen, only the Hostess dealt with us (who was the Night Manager. HORRIBLE PLACE, HORRIBLE SERVICE, SLOW, OVERPRICED, LACKS ATMOSPHERE!!!!!
local, sustainable, on its way up.
Went to Preservation Kitchen in Bothell for the first time the other day. I called ahead and checked the website to check prices, because the setting is so high end I was afraid the prices would be. Not so! : ) Although the menu is semi-swanky, the prices were comparable to any average restaurant. My main reason for wanting to go there is their intent to use only locally grown, sutainable ingredients. I was unhappy to learn that they do use caged eggs, but said they could use cage free on request. Hopefully they will make this standard. My over easy eggs were a little underdone, and the bacon was not crisp (although it was the delicious thick cut). Told them I would love to see some shredded hashbrowns offered in addition to the softer home fries. Their sourdough was not sour either (tho bakery fresh).
If this establishment can snag a breakfast chef from of any of the high volume breakfast restaurants and put them to work with these local, sustainable ingredients, combined with the extremely nice decor (wedding quality venue) and the prices that would make you think you were at Shari's, they will have an absolute winner. I plan on going back for dinner sometime and see how good the dinner chef is.
Food and service outstanding.
First, the good. We have been in numerous times since the beginning. We have found it odd that in just one year of being open, we have been greeted by three men who have informed us that they are the chef. Unless there is 9 of them, something tells me this place turns over more employees than a nursing home does patients. Now I have worked in the restaurant business for 15+, my sister is a lifer also, and my fhusband's whole family runs a little greek place in the Village, so I have reputable sources that tell me that this kind of thing isn't necessarily normal. Either way, I don't really mind, because for one, the food has always been spot on, but most importantly (and selfishly) the food recently has been out of this world amazing. First of all, the new chef has a set.....I don't think I haven seen a fondue on a menu since the 70s (I had mentioned that to the chef, and he told me he wasn't even alive in the 70s) hilarious, and even if it's true, this guy gets mad props because if that's true, hes cooking way beyond his years. I'm kinda hoping it was true, it adds to the fact that he is a cutie, and to think that he's not even 30 makes me love it even more. Ok, back on track Lillian...
The food is awesome, the previously mentioned fondue makes life better, even if for that short amount of time until it is gone. The zucchini slices, though incredibly simple, are seasoned perfectly, and the plating is so beautiful makes you think you should have paid more than $8 or whatever it is for zuchhini slices, a little sea salt, cherry tomatoes, and some olive oil. We've taken a crack at the bar menu, not our favorite, but still decent if you are rolling in after work looking for some fried finger foods to compliment the $3 drafts. The entrees are what bring us back. The two favorites that seem to stick out and the two that keep getting ordered again and again are the salmon with risotto (I now know what God eats) and the Codd with vegetables (yeah, that's it, no potatoes, no rice, just vegetables) it doesn't need it, it's that good.
Wine selection isn't even comparable to anything else in the area, it's also that good. Service, although we have been served by a different person everytime has been good, a hiccup every now and then, but for the most part a definite plus.
The thing that gets me about this place is the fact that we have been in numerous times, we have not been greeted by an owner/front house manager. I am pretty sure I know who one of the owners is, and honestly buddy would it kill you to get up from the computer screen just once to walk over and thank us for coming in, ask us how everything is, how we heard about you, how many times we went in. Now maybe I am way off, maybe there is a guy who just comes into the bar, doesn't drink anything, and just works on his computer. Maybe I'm just looking for something to gripe about, but the website promotes this casual intamate "everyone knows everyone" feeling and the owners (once again, if this is just someone sitting at a bar, I completely apologize) can't be bothered to do a a quick walk through the bar (all 5 tables) every once in a while. Nothing like sitting on a pedistal out in plain view, real inviting.
Oh well, I guess when it'a all boiled down, you come to a restaurant for good service (great service here) and good food (great food here) the other stuff might be more of an issue if the previous two weren't as good as they are, so I guess I owe the owners an apology, next time they come to my table I will tell them :o)
Place is great, if you know what it is. Food is great, but if you love the feeling of being hounded by your server because she has nothing else to do or NO other tables to tend to, then this is the place for you. Unfortunately, this place doesn't seem to show up on many people's radars, and it's obvious why. When you drive by it, you have no idea what IT is. It looks like a house on a hill, not a restaurant. And am I the only one who thinks that the name Preservation Kitchen sounds like the name of a soup kitchen? I had written a review about how great the restaurant is, but now I feel like it's such a shame that people don't know where to go in Bothell for really really good food because between the fruit market and the auto body shop, it looks like a vacant lot.
Great dinner, place for drinks and private parties.
I really enjoy this cozy, personable restaurant. I've met friends here for drinks and appetizers, dined here with my husband and hosted a private party for 26.
The atmosphere is quaint and contemporary simultaneously. The food is delicious and I love that they are aiming for local/sustainable foods. Nice wine selection.
I would definitely recommend Preservation Kitchen to a friend.
Great Food, fantastic service, and an intimate atmosphere. I was there for brunch and a private party. The food was great and I loved the intimate feel of the restaurant. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone!

This is a comment for BZP who went to great length to slander this restaurant. I am a local business owner of 8 yrs. I personally have done business with this company several times; they are and have been highly respected and trusted in the Bothell community for years! They are professional, kind and caring in addition to having wonderful food.
Unlike many of the other restaurants in Bothell.
I find it despicable that BZP would spend so much time writing such a nasty review rather than talking directly to the restaurant manager. Had they of taken that route, I am certain management would have refunded their money and probably given them a FREE dinner in the future. This is the difference at this restaurant.
Who ever reads the review captioned Pick another by BZP please don't be swayed . This restaurant will bend over backwards to create a memorable evening or talk directly to the Owner, Susan.
