Editorial Review for Judson Memorial Church – by Tony Phillips
Overview
In 1890, Edward Judson began building a yellow-brick and terra cotta memorial to his father Adoniram, the first American foreign missionary. With lower Manhattan already in boom, he wanted Judson Memorial to serve the social needs of immigrants. Backed by John D. Rockefeller, no expense was spared and the memorial--with architecture by Stanford White, stained glass by John La Farge and sculpture by Augustus St. Gaudens--became a prime example of the American Renaissance.
Forward
Jump-cut to the early sixties. Luminaries from dance, painting and theater--Trisha Brown, Robert Rauschenberg and Sam Shepard--staged happenings beneath the church's 165-foot campanile tower. With the support of Reverend Moody, post-modern dance codified as Judson Dance Theatre. Summarized by Yvonne Rainer's infamous "No" manifesto, Judson deglamorized the body and rebelled against theatrical artifice. Dance was not technique; it was movement.
