L'Absinthe Restaurant

Rated top romantic brasserie.

  • Extensive wine list
  • Perfect for parties
  • Brunch offered

L'Absinthe Brasserie-Restaurant is an authentic Parisian brasserie, named after the famous aperitif well appreciated by many artists at the turn of the century.

Formerly of the prestigious Lutece Restaurant, Jean-Michel Bergougnoux, the chef-owner, offers his light and flawless cuisine with a contemporary touch.

The Art Nouveau decor is subtly underscored by the authentic zinc bar, polished brass rails, and lace curtains adorning the windows. These details are highlighted by the bronze-encased crystal tulip chandeliers that contribute to the lively ambiance of the brasserie. They also reflect the bistro posters of the namesake liqueur and of its epoch in the large wooded mirrors that line the back walls of the dining room.

L'Absinthe Brasserie-Restaurant, nestled in the Upper East Side, near Sotheby's, Antique Show at the Armory, and Madison Avenue Shopping, is an authentic turn

Editorial Review for L'Absinthe Restaurant – by Bryan Miller

The Scene
You could be at a brasserie on Paris' Left Bank, for the setting has all the accouterments of the real thing: oversized mirrors, ornate chandeliers, brass railings and roomy banquettes. Contributing to the romantic scene are discreet servers, who know when less is better. Because of its slightly out-of-the-way location, it draws an older crowd.

The Food
Chef-owner Jean-Michel Bergougnoux, formerly of Lutece, melds the best of classic cuisine with modern accents--some of them surprising. Luscious seared fois gras arrives with a corn crepe and sweet rhubarb confit, while tender pork tenderloin gets a textural boost from roasted macadamia nuts and porcini mushrooms. You won't find a better choucroute garni in town--sauerkraut, potatoes and assorted sausages--and the thin-crusted apple tart alone is worth the trip.

Pros: Mostly everything

Cons: Linen was a little limp... all considered not bad!

This is a very authentic Parisian bistro. The bread is great, the food is classic and inspired at the the same time, and the staff is authentically aloof. I'm glad it's in the neighborhood.

Pros: great food and atmosphere

Cons: expensive
