Editorial Review for Gleason's Gym – by Citysearch Editors
In Short
Photographs of former members Jake LaMotta, Cassius Clay and Mike Tyson line the fire engine-red walls of this classic boxing landmark, where a polyrhythmic soundtrack of punching bags motivates international contenders, amateurs and children alike. Most exercise--sparring, shadow boxing and mitt work--is done in one of four boxing rings. Additional equipment, such as free weights, cardio machines, jump ropes, chin-up bars and weight machines, rounds out the workout.

Insider Tips
When to GoGleason's hosts White-Collar Fights, in which amateurs (including women and kids) get to mix it up in the ring in front of a paying audience. The events happen on Saturdays, usually once a month. Call for a schedule.

If you want an awesome, satisfying workout but can't stand gyms and can never keep a steady gym schedule Gleason's is definitely the place for you. When you walk in it is an intimidating place, but the people there are so friendly they become your family. I went there to learn how to box, before i knew it in about a month i was in the best shape of my life. It is an amazing and fast way to get into shape and feel great about yourself. I recommend this to all my friends who have no interest in boxing but want to loose weight. I also recommend this because it is a good form of self protection. Boxing changes your life, gives you confidence and self esteem. And I'll tell you what I tell all my friends, you don't have to fight and get in the ring with someone. Many people don't, all you have to do is train. It is amazing, totally changed my life, mind, body and soul. I also met a few life time friends in there. The prices are very reasonable and so are the trainers fees. It is worth any penny.
Pros: Reasonable fees, one on one training, great results, beautiful neighborhood
Cons: hard to find parking before 6:00pm

Walking into Gleasons may be intimidating, but talk to someone and find out that everyone's great in this low-key atmosphere. Very reasonable monthly rates ($70/mo. no gimmicks), no silly initiation fees, a great group of trainers who offer very reasonable rates ($25-45/1-1.5 hr workout depending on who you pick). I'm not a pro or am fighter--just there to get a great workout--nothing beats it. Great place to try boxing out if you've always been curious. This is a boxing gym though, so no fancy schmancy cardio equipment or saunas, etc., just heavy bags, treadmills, etc. just what you need to become a first-rate boxer.
Pros: Friendly staff, Open to Beginners, Great Deal
Cons: No fancy equipment, No fancy locker room, Hike to Subway
