Editorial Review for Le Petit Cafe – by Erin Behan

In Short
Many diners seem to prefer breakfast, often stretching well past the bounds of lunch, at this quaint Carroll Gardens cafe. Choices are standard and plentiful: omelettes and egg dishes, pancakes, bagels, muffins, croissants, mini-doughnuts, cookies, etc. Salads, 18 panini options and burgers from the grill round out the menu. The interior is small and clean, with limited seating. The outdoor garden more than doubles the dining space and is tented in winter.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

Get your vitamins with the fresh-fruit smoothies, but for a refreshing, less vitamin-infused drink, try the milk-based green tea smoothie.

When to Go

The takeout crowd bustles with the early-morning rush to work, and on the weekends, brunch can overwhelm the small place. If you're looking for peace, try late morning to midday weekdays, or after 3pm on weekends.

My husband and I went for brunch on Sunday for our second visit to Le Petit Cafe, and were again disappointed with the lack of service. We waited for 15-20 minutes and were never acknowledged -- not even by the owner! We finally had to seat ourselves when a table opened up. Our waiter did his best to take care of us, but the wait staff is spread so thin. Our coffee was never filled and my husband's pancakes were served without butter or syrup. I put much of the blame on the ownership. It seems that much of the waitstaff is making an effort, but ownership is either too disorganized or too cheap to add servers. The food is wonderful and the atmosphere is great, but the service is bad enough for me to go elsewhere for brunch. We won't be back until they improve service.

My first 2 visits to Le Petit were disappointing (hence my last review). I recently went back to see if things had changed - mostly because I was craving one of their fabulous paninis. It seems as though someone at Le Petit has been paying attention to the reviews! Service has really picked up. We were acknowledged when we walked in, received attentive and polite service, didn't wait too long for our food, and were given eye contact and a "thank you" by everyone (from the waitress, to the cooks, to the cashier) on our way out. I've been back 3 times since - for both bruch and dinner. Things at Le Petit are really looking up!
