What Our Expert Scouts Are Saying

The Whale Wins
If we learned anything from Moby Dick, it’s that the whale always wins and you could probably avoid a brutal and untimely death if you just remember that. This is probably the reason why Renee Erickson focuses on smaller fish, like trout, at her new Fremont resto. Third time’s a charm for Erickson who is already a hero among local foodophiles for her role in Boat Street Café and the Walrus and the Carpenter. Her newest aquatically named venture possesses similar qualities to her previous two, like a focus on piles of rustic wood fired eats and the sort of clean, stylish interior that’s become Erickson’s calling card. Divided between “oven” and “pantry,” the menu highlights include a whole roasted trout, roasted radicchio, and other seasonal veggies.

Renee Erickson has done it again. Simple but beautiful food served up thoughtfully in a room to match. Don't miss the bone marrow, trout or sardines on toast. The daily happy hour 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. is a great value with bites just $3 - $7.

Come w/other adventurous eaters and plan to share. Sardines on toast is a winner, as is the Wattle and Daub rum, coffee liqueur and grapefruit cocktail.

Two things you’re guaranteed at a Renee Erickson restaurant: stylish digs and delicious food. Erickson's latest enterprise, The Whale Wins, delivers on both. Enjoy lunch or dinner in the dining room or cozy up to the Pac Northwest elements in the garden patio. The ‘Whale Call Happy Hour’ serves up tasty deals like sardines, curried tomato paste & shaved fennel resting on top of grilled toast.

This lovely place is warmed by the handsome wood-fueled oven that's the center of attention. It roasts meats and fish -- including an amazing whole trout, boneless and served head on -- as well as local veggies. Order the housemade pickle plate as a counterpoint to all those deep, rich flavors. Tables are close enough that diners might find new friends over the course of a meal.

Its actually the chicken that wins here. Simple well executed fare in a communal dining atmosphere. Great price point and generous portions, an anomaly in today's restaurants! Warning: if you are not a fan of hearing your neighbors every word, skip the whale.

Get anything with smoked mackerel. Nice counter option for solo dining. Thoughtful wine list with a great Sancerre rosé.

Such a fantastic new restaurant! Beautiful space and absolutely delicious food. The marrow bones served with a pickled chanterelle salad rock! And don't miss the cocktails, they are stellar.

Simple food yet innovative flavors with a wine and cocktail list that is equally enticing. Focus is vegetable heavy with a seafood backbone. Try the sardine toast, radicchio salad and whole trout.

The Whale Wins is a stellar place to bring your gluten-free or vegetarian friends without feeling like you are sacrificing the dining experience. Purveyors are picked with careful attention and the quality shows. Order a Normandy Old Fashioned made with Calvados rum, it will not disappoint!
