Editorial Review for Jack's Record Cellar – by Kim Cooper
The Scene
A landmark since its 1951 founding in an actual Haight Street cellar, since 1962, home has been this modified Victorian parlor. Everything in the big room is lightly dusted with a sprinkling of fuzz, from the floor-to-ceiling stacks of 78s to the vintage '30s promotional posters to the hanging chandeliers to the customers. That familiar face behind the counter is longtime manager Roy Loney, founding member of the Flamin' Groovies.
The Goods
As the only Bay Area shop specializing in fragile, scarce 78s, Jack's is the place to go whether your tastes run to frantic R&B, Xavier Cugat rhumbas, Jolson or Lombardo. The vinyl section reflects the collector's mentality, with country and folk discs organized by label and Beatles mono LPs carefully marked to differentiate them from the less-desirable stereo mixes. The big 45 section might yield that favorite lost single, and the $1 LP racks are full of weirdness worth spinning.
