Chez Nous

Winner: Best Wine List 2006

  • Wine list
  • Wine appreciation dinners
  • French cuisine

Chez nous has amassed a remarkable number of awards- Zagat Survey's "America's Top Restaurants 1994-2006", Highest Food rating in Houston 2006, Gourmet Magazine's "America's Top Tables Selection", Guide to the Best Restaurants in America, Mobil Travel Guide's "Quality Rated", Wine Spectator's "Award of Excellence", Wines and Spirit's "Hall of Fame 1998-2006" and the list continues. Our menu includes- Gulf Shrimp Provencale sautéed with garlic, herbs, tomato and lemon.

Chef Gerard Brach got his culinary training at the French Riviera near Monaco and on this side of the Atlantic at The Four Seasons Restaurant in New York City. He spent the seventies as a successful restaurant consultant yet "missing the action in the kitchen" as he puts it. In 1984 he sold his company and "for the fun of it," opened Chez nous in an old Pentecostal church in Humble.

Editorial Review for Chez Nous – by Citysearch Editors

The Scene
Located in Humble (northeast of Bush airport), this modestly remodeled frame church has been a bastion of fine dining for several years. The rustic interior could stand some refreshing, but that, along with the tuxedoed young serving staff's explain-it-all-cordiality, is part of the quaint appeal.

The Food
Taking its cue from classic French cuisine, the usual suspects--like chateaubriand, foie gras, vichyssoise and escargot anchor the menu, but expect a couple of entrees and a half dozen appetizers to change each evening. A succulent rack of lamb, carved at your table, in a nutty port reduction is a standout. Sesame-crusted salmon's satisfying, if not as striking as other entrees. A potato and goat cheese Charlotte cleverly adapting the conventional dessert form to an appetizer gets high points, as does a lavender-laced version of crème brulee.

This is the restaurant that's always on the top of our list. It stays there because they know what-works-with-what. We've never tried anything and said "why would anyone put these flavors together?" It is classic yet inventive and consistenly outstanding. It's really special when you have two people with very different tastes. "He" likes meat and has several favorites. "She" likes fish and lamb and veal and oysters-- and salad after the main course, not before it, Some people look forward to a special vacation--we look forward to lots of dinners at Chez nous. We aren't 'those' people who are going to be happy 'when'.... We're happy we can have dinner here in the middle of the week for no special reason. So have fun wherever you may go, and we'll stay home and enjoy the food and wine and service at Chez Nous.

Pros: Finest food, wine & service--feels like a place in Provence.

Cons: Haven't found one yet

Simply stated, from the decandent entrees to the scrumptuous desserts---- my favorite the creme brulee trio---- there is no better restaurant in Houston. Quite frankly, this is one of the best restaurants I have ever dined at period. The only drawback being that we live on South Padre Island and frequent Houston maybe once or twice a year!
