This bar used to be a Gay Bar where the current Grand Hyatt is located. When that property was bought out, Sonya's moved to its current location and went upscale with a nice interior and great view of the Sound. Now the place is changing to a het bar which is okay but why does the staff need to be rude to those people who were semi-regulars but now feel unwelcomed? The bobbed blonde bartender in the back bar wasn't rude but perhaps just truly ignorant in the basics of good service and simple manners. She alone has caused several in our group to never return to Sonya's which is a shame. For a Saturday night, the place was not quite empty so perhaps the economics of the place doesn't require a steady clientele. And the bars continue to decline.

My husband and I were in Seattle for a week and were lucky enough to stumble across this bar on our first day. Mostly locals frequent this bar; we felt like we were at Cheers. I assume the bartending staff have changed since the last review was written in 2005. We met 4 different bartenders and all were very friendly. Locals and bartenders alike were eger tell us what not to miss in this awesome city. Don't miss the view from the back bar! Beer is very affordable here too.

We went to Sonya's for a drink and got really bad attitude from the bartender. Not only is he curt towards "world travelers" and unwelcoming, his bartendering abilities are nothing to rave about. It is a pity because the atmosphere appears warm and relaxing, and the bar area looks enviting.

Really, Sonya's is the crown jewel of downtown bars. The bartenders are highly gifted individuals who can both make you a very tasty drink and engage in fun bartender banter. The crowd is very much made up of regulars, but not intimidating- don't worry, you'll be a regular soon too. But let's not forget the secret that even most regulars don't know- the food is so good it is absurd and cheap cheap cheap- the best kept secret for a laid back dinner date in their part of town. My friends are always impressed when I bring them to Sonya's, taking people to Sonya's actually makes you cooler.
Pros: Food, food, food, ace bartenders, value
Cons: there are no cons!

For great music and a great atmosphere, Sonyas is a must on Friday nights. The night is hosted by some local DJ's (Jon Lee and Ryno) who are also owners of DownLow Music in Capitol Hill. They are both very talented behind the turntables and the House music they play is all the freshest stuff in the city. Sonyas also just remodeled the front so its a perfect spot to get a drink. Give it a try one Friday night as you won't be disappointed.
Pros: Music, Drinks
