Avoid This place!

by Anonymous2896

Venue doesn't help in anyway to help promote shows or events!!! Spent much money on venue rental $120 for early evening slot or 15% which ever is greater and personal advertising... poor results.

Bad parking area... VERY limited street parking... paid parking lot next to venue.

No art on walls

Staff VERY Unfriendly

Staff uncommunicative when using both email and phone.

Hard to tell if the venue is open.

  • Pros: Nice Stage
  • Cons: Poor Back Stage , Poor Sound, Poor Communication

Beloved mainstay of Seattle's alternative arts scene offers drinks, dancing, live bands and theater in an adamantly funky setting.

by Contributor

The Scene
"No minors, drunks, drugs, bigots, or loudmouths," commands the sign at the entrance. Add extra admonitions against homophobes and the humorless and you've got Re-bar's funky humanist vibe in a nutshell. From the art on the walls to the home-grown celebrity DJs in the booth to the crowd-pleasing camp on the stage, it's a peerless social haven for fun-loving, artsy freaks and those who love them.

The Draw
Showing staples like Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Dina Martina, and performances from the Brown Derby Series, Re-bar has been a mainstay of alternative theater in the Seattle area. Though usually dark and noisy there's something different going on nearly every night of the week here.

Best Fringe Theater

by samhandwichez

Re-bar is the best theater because it isn't a theater - it's a bar. They do what every theater in Seattle strives to do: present some of Seattle's funnest, cutting edge, and original theater - without pretense or stuffiness.

The Reason they succede where others fail is because it is a bar first and foremost; so when you go to theater at Re-bar and you find yourself, mid-beer, watching a great piece of theater, it totally catches you off gaurd; all of a sudden you can't pull yourself away to refill the beer you didn't realize you had already finnished. And they do all kinds of different events and plays so I beleive that, at some point, every body will see something they like at Re-bar; be it rock musicals like Hedwig and the Angry Inch to the ridiculousness of The Brown Derby Series to artsy rock/concept shows like the band Awesome's play/concert "Delaware" to the campy sensibilty of choral ensemble Captain Smartypants, or maybe the one-night-only monthly events like Burlesque shows or the newest craze, The Seattle Spelling Bee - what ever it is it'll go well with booze!

It says something that On The Boards, an incredibly a well funded and nationally respected performing arts center, has picked up at several shows and artists that made their debut at not so well funded nor internationally respected Re-bar. So go to Re-bar to see the best local talent in the coolest shows (sure every now and again you get a lemon, but at worst you have drink and have something to talk about afterwards between dancing to that nights DJ). You never know what you'll get at Re-bar, I guess that's part of the fun, but I have found that more than often you'll see a gem that you wouldn't have seen anywhere else in Seattle!

I love this place and think of it as one of Seattle's character defining places!

  • Pros: Theater, events, friends of Dorothy and Ellen
  • Cons: No free parking lot, at the bottom of Capitol Hill (a walk up if starting a "hop"), dance nights have a small cover ($3- $5)

Prince vs Michael party 3/23/06

by bombhiphop

Prince and associated artists go toe-to-toe on the dance floor against Michael and the Jackson family during this ultimate dance party! The face-off always promises to be a dance marathon - "Black Sweat" takes a swing at "PYT (Pretty Young Thing)," only to be pounded by "Wanna Be Starting Somethin," which had better watch it's back when "Kiss" comes around. This event was conceived four years by Bomb Hip-Hop who have successfully produced many of these parties in San Francisco and even one in Bend (Oregon) last year. "As a concept for a DJ battle, Prince vs. Michael is brilliant," writes SF Weekly's Hiya Swanhuyser. DJ Dave Paul mixes album cuts, remixes, rare tracks and classics from his extensive record collection; featuring music from Prince, Michael, The Time, The Jackson 5, Sheila E., Janet Jackson, Vanity 6 and many more. 3/23/06

strong drinks, great music

by queenlucky

For a good time, go to Re-bar! Every night is different, from the theater to the dj's: house music to hip hop to punk rock to drag queens. Re-bar now has a full bar, with hard liquor! Nice people work there, and nice people go there. It's a landmark!

  • Pros: Great atmosphere, Great music, Great theater
  • Cons: Walls need painting, More free parking, Longer hours
