bad service, no go

Wow. To pay to be treated this way? Not even a slacker non-child- supporting -stole-my-savings-to-support-a-bimbo-girlfriend ex-husband should be treated the way. Never have I asked for water after waiting for nearly 10 minutes to even get a menu, get a nasty look, and when she returned, she slammed the pitcher and nearly cracked the glasses as she pounded them down on our table. Why? We had the audacity to ask for water.

She then stalked off without taking our order as though we had insulted her by asking for service. Imagine our gaul. What kind of royalty were we anyway to ask to be served IN A RESTAURANT! Had it been crazy busy, I could have understood harried slow service--but it was no different than any other restaurant at dinner time. Was is a shock to her to have people there at dinner time? Dinner time--you know when people PAY to be fed!

Too bad, years ago this was a good place to go, but we left and we will never feel masochistic enough to go back again.

In Short
Known for jazz, blues and chicken gumbo, the cavernous, brick-walled restaurant and bar is welcoming to all. The stage is in the middle of the dining room, putting music front and center. Louisiana cooking offers heaps of interesting fare, and it appears that the New Orleans tries to serve it all from the extensive menu. Tthe kitchen turns out New Orleans' standards such as creoles, jambalayas and etouffees.

Not always great

I have to say I almost hate to say what I'm about to say since I had a great time here when I first went about a year ago. Unfortunately, the place has gone down since. I returned a few weeks ago with a bunch of out-of-town friends wanting to show them a great time, and it was disappointing. The music wasn't great, maybe it wasn't my kind of jazz that night, but for the $8 cover, I was expecting a bit more. Service was also very slow, even though when we first arrived there weren't a lot of people there. I'm not sure if management has recently changed or what has happened, but what used to be one of my favorite places is now on my "avoid if at all possible" list. Quite disappointing.

• Pros: Atmosphere (when the band is good), people watching
• Cons: Slow service, staff not very friendly, quality of music varies (widely!)

Go on Mondays

I go there for the music. I'm from the East, but whenever I'm in Seattle, I go to the New Orleans on Monday evening. The Quintet (sometimes a Sextet) is old-style blues and jazz at its best. The guys have a CD that I've almost worn out. They're so comfortable there that you feel like they're playing in your living room. The drinks are good, and I don't remember much about the food. I go there for the music.

Delicious!

This place is great! My fiance and I like to take out-of-town family and friends here when they come to visit. The gumbo is THE BEST (a quote from my fiance who's family is from Louisana) and the atmosphere is fun. The music has been great every time we've gone, the only drawback is once the music plays, conversation stops b/c it is a bit loud. The price is right on, which is nice. Service is sometimes a little slow but we didn't mind once the music started. Great place for gumbo and music!

New Orleans

Have been here for lunch several times now. The food is great but the service (at lunchtime) is usually slow. Shrimp Etouffe and Eggplant Lafitte are spicy and fantastic. Fried oyster po' boy was good too, nice juciy oysters. Atmosphere is nice with all the pictures, although one time we had a man come in off the street and beg for money from us as we sat at our table! It was kind of funny though so there you go.

• Cons: slowish lunch service, pioneer square bums

I'm not a big fan of creole food, but I was pleasantly surprised. The kitchen asked how spicy I wanted it and made it to my specifications perfectly. It was some of the best food I've had in Seattle yet!

The is a great place to meet your friends and have a wonderful meal or drink. Lots off good food to choose from and friendly people. Top pick for me!

Food, fun & music

I have been a fan of the New Orleans for over 15 years and Gaye has always been there to make people welcome. The Plantation Stuff Flounder is to die for. I don't understand the folks who haven't liked this place or the food. In all the times I've been there I've had excellent food, service and a great time. I highly recommend it!

P.S. If you go early on the weekends, there is no cover until about 8:00 or so.

The live music was great. The food wasn't as good as I expected. It was just missing something. There were four of us and we all tasted each others dishes. Everything had the same flavor. We tried this restaurant in a desperate search to relive our days in Lafayette LA. We are just going to have to go south. I wouldnt go to this restaurant again.
