Big Time Over-rated

by luckychineseguy

oily, cold and very disappointing. We've been here at least 6x over a period of 5 years and their food did not change. Mostly, out-of-towners want to try Shanghainese food, but each time we try, we are disappointed by the quality and the price. Trust me I am chinese and know my chinese food. Someone is putting high reviews to ramp up their rating.

  • Pros: quick to give bill
  • Cons: food

Taste like cheap chinese buffet

by ohmn

nothing chinese about the menu. If you want to have real chinese food, don't bother go there. ordered 4 dishes. All tasted like cheap chinese buffet dishes. If you want to grab a quick bite, maybe.

Definitely not going back. There are a couple of restaurants around the blocks that are way better than this one.

  • Pros: fast; service is ok
  • Cons: taste like cheap chinese buffer

Great Chinese Restaurant in International District - Must try the Barley Green Hand Shaven Noodles

by pilot12

We've been here twice before and will return again. Our favorite is the House Special Barley Green Hand Shaven Noodles with shrimp, chicken and squid. Food is served very quickly, is hot and always delicious.

Horrible (Xiao LOng Bao) Shanghai Dumplings

by eddyg

Went in thinking I might have found a place to have the soupy Shanghai dumplings in Seattle but alas...they were chunky, not soupy at all with a thick outer skin that made the whole dumpling taste like an overcooked meatball. The dumpling is supposed to have a thin outer skin with a soupy inside that bursts with flavour when you bite into it. NOT! Big disappointment.

The hot and sour soup and the Ma Poh ToFu was OK.

Would not go back.

Big disappointment

by rmcmahon

Hard review. I was expecting so much based on previous reviews, but I was sorely disappointed. I have yet to find really good, authentic chinese here. I am used to chinese from Vancouver, Toronto and NYC, so perhaps I am too spoiled. Anyway here it is: Busy. Rushed meal at the end. Mediocre to poor service. (too forever to get our order in and then were didn't see the wait staff until they tried to rush us out). Food was good, not great. Kind of bland, nothing special. Not even close to NYC chinese. Best thing on the menu was the dumplings. (which were good) Definately kid friendly (or just a lot of kids in the restaurant) All in all a big disappointment.

  • Pros: Kid friendly
  • Cons: Service, food, price

Best Chinese in Seattle? No way!

by botanist

I went here with a friend who raved about the freshly shaven noodles and their dumplings. I was disappointed on both accounts. Way too doughy. Dumplings should have a thin "skin" not gummy as these were. The vegetables were over cooked.

I'd take Hing Loon (same street on the east corner of the block) or 663 Bistro (SE kitty-corner from Hing Loon) over Shanghia Garden any day. Granted these places feature Hong Kong-style cuisine, but the quality is so much better.

great vegetarian options, super-fast service

by tygerli1y

I've been to Shanghai Garden several times now. Every time I go, no matter what day of the week of time of day, I'm always seated right away, and my food always arrives much faster than expected. The menu is extensive, with many many options for my vegetarian companion. I particularly recommend the barley-green hand-shaven noodles. The texture is amazing. I crave them all the time! And I usually have enough left over after becoming pleasantly satisfied for lunch the next day. A lovely bonus.

Not the best service

by phactorx

I went there for mother?s day and the service was not the best. I don't know why. Maybe it was because we are African American. (why is it that when I go to a place I have to think about that?) I felt like they we're rushing us out. We have four children. No one ever asked us what we needed. The water boy did give us water but pretty much I had to ask several times for them to remove plates and napkins from the table. I noticed no one else's table had plates piled high etc. They kinda pushed the check on us and when I said I wanted to order more they actually looked disappointed. I ordered fried ice cream for the kids and they kinda threw it on the table at me. I kept wondering what I was doing wrong. I found a large damsel fly (cooked) in my food. I didn't say anything. But considering the bad service, I should have. I found it kinda pricey and the portions were not as large as I thought they where going to be. All in all it was an OK experience. Maybe it was the mothers' day rush, who knows. Maybe they felt we we're staying too long and weren?t spending enough money, who knows. (I left a decent tip at 20%) But considering I had a family of six it was still pretty economical. And luckily they (the rest of my family) didn?t seem to notice these things and had a good time. That?s all that really mattered. But I had to sit there wondering what the heck was going on. Kinda ruined it for me. Why can?t I just go to a place, order, eat and pay and not feel like a second class citizen?

perfect chinese food

by turkishgirl

I'm not a chinese food person really but whatever i ate in this place i loved it. My favorite is mu shu pork or chicken doesn't matter it is delicious. I love that plum sauce in it. And that green chowmein with anything i love it.. the service is really fast, sometimes you have to wait for a table but believe me it takes only 5 min after you order and always in the same taste. Waitress love their job and treat you like you are a guest in their home.. I love this place..
