The Experience
Located in the beautiful International District, the small museum is filled with an amazing array of exhibits, all devoted to the collection, preservation and display of Asian Pacific American culture, history and art. A sense of struggle and pride is evident in artifacts and signs from early Asian businesses, including restaurants, social clubs, a barber shop, an herbal shop and a hand laundry.
You'll Want to Know
A multimedia station provides access to the Densho Archives, offering interviews with many local residents whose families were among the 110,000 Japanese Americans forced from their homes and interned during WWII. Hear an interview with Bainbridge Island dentist Dr. Frank Kitamoto as he talks about his family's own experience and the community's reaction to the removal of their neighbors. Kitamoto's story and others inspired the best seller "Snow Falling on Cedars" by David Guterson.
