Fresh produce and gourmet frozen foods sold at affordable prices.
by Martha Burr
In Short
Founder Joseph Coulombe started this L.A.-based convenience chain 34 years ago. Today, you can get exotic, prepackaged frozen foods, fresh salsas, huge portobello mushrooms, baby artichokes and heirloom tomatoes fresher--and cheaper--than at most supermarkets. Inexpensive meat, fish, coffees and teas, dozens of cheeses, grains and pastas cram the shelves. The frozen section features tasty treats, including barbecue chicken pizzas, mushroom risotto and salmon patties. Beer, wine and liquor sections are stocked with very affordable labels.
Great groceries, but can be busy

Oh I love Trader Joe's--the products are generally very high-quality and cheaper than in major grocery stores, and there are lots of little things you can buy on impulse (like dried persimmons) that won't break the bank. And it's the best place in the world to buy wine, as most of it is under $10 and pretty good--the quality is sometimes questionable, but at $5 a bottle you can afford to get a bad one once in a while. Also a very nice place to buy cheese, artichoke hearts, orange juice, chicken sausage, lunch meat, frozen fruit, dried fruit, hummus and much more... AND there are samples and complimentary coffee samples all the time!
