I love this store!! I can come in and ask for the book "was reviewed the other day on the radio-it's about a guy and he does something" and they say "Oh it's right here" they are great neighbors and have often had school reading lists posted during the summer so my daughter could come in and buy her required reading. The staff recs are great, they can get a special order in just a few days. I have seen them ask the parents of naughty kids to reign them in, but I have also seen them get down on the floor and show a kid how to "pat the bunny". And they gift wrap!
Pros: Great staff picks, very helpful with suggestions
Cons: Parking in Ballard ca be a nightmare

Unless you want to be regailed with how everything from the lack of parking in Ballard to the Iraq War is George Bush's fault avoid this store. Employees have an attitude and consider themselved superior (including one lady I assumed was a boss or owner). Previous poster correct about their dislike of children - then again most of my points are very Seattle so this store might just be exactly what you are looking for. Id bring out of towners here for a taste of Seattle.

Whenever I need a kids book recommendation, I always go to Secret Garden. They know their stock, they have specific recommendations for age levels and reading tastes, and they've actually read the books. It's a friendly neighborhood store that's never too busy to help a customer. And their staff picks for adults are always good too.
Pros: staff recommendations

Though they tout themselves as child-focused with a great book collection situated at the window, don't be fooled into thinking they actually want a child in their store. They appear to have a look but don't touch policy. Though they have loose bricks on the floor in the childrens' section that naturally attracts kids to the area, don't assume your kids can actually touch them. And even though there may be toys on the floor that any child (or parent) would assume were there for children to play with, the staff will quickly be all over you if your child makes that false assumption. Though their location is great, my experience was very transactional and uninviting - not what you would look for in your local, independent bookstore.
Pros: location
Cons: customer service
