Falls into the "Only Seattle Could Get Away with This" category

What happened? Granted, for me, Kidd Valley is a destination when the kids are starving and we need food fast (we don't do drive thru's). I've never raved about it, but I never dissed it. Until today. In fairness, no one in the family ordered a true meat burger, which is KV's calling card.

The best thing we can say was the servers were nice.

* Garden Burger * The bun tasted day-old. The patty seemed microwaved. The mushrooms were dry and salty. *Garlic Fries* Generous garlic and crispy fries, though my wife had to re-approach the counter two times to get them to the table -- so she watched us eat. *Chicken Strips* My daughter ordered the chicken strip kid's meal. She was happy. *Onion Rings* I was really excited about the Walla Walla onion rings. Unfortunately, they were downright bad. So crunchy that it hurt to eat. Once inside the onion was good. Kinda like eating a pistachio with the shell on. *Shakes* OK, here's where they lost me for life. From my recollection of 5+ years back, McCorporation's shakes were chock-full-o chemicals but were tasty enough that I could drink 3/4's of a large one before the various sugars overwhelmed. The shakes we ordered were barely recognizable. My vanilla tasted of vanilla but was overly sweet, loaded with artificial fillers and air, had no ice crystals and was overly sweet. My son's seasonal raspberry seemed to have almost no sweetener. I can't comment on my daughter's mocha shake because she kept it well-guarded.

This particular KV is on prime Queen Anne real estate and, oddly, usually has a parking space available which you have to love when the station wagon is filled with hungry folks. But like many restaurants in Seattle sitting on good dirt, one leaves feeling slighted.

Decent for the money... for the money...

Kidd Valley has a good, not great, hamburger for the money (Read: for the money.) These days, a good burger will basically cost you $10. Kidd Valley's is $5.50. Half the money, half the quality? Yes, in a nutshell. These really aren't very good burgers, but they can be tasty if you keep your standards low. I like to think of them as a good snack.

• Pros: Cheap, fast.
• Cons: Not the best burger around.

Generous burgers with a side of nostalgia.

Kidd Valley was once just a humble burger shack in the U-Village neighborhood catering to college kids and 1950s nostalgia-seekers. Now it's a full-blown local chain with 10 locations and a list of fans that's as big as the phone book. For many, burgers act as merely an excuse to order the sweet french-fried onions, the fried mushrooms and the creamy fruit shakes. Some opt for the hot ham-and-Swiss or the grilled chicken sandwiches.

Take the high-road, and skip the Valley

Can't say I was impressed by the food, service or atmosphere at this burger joint. Truly no better than any one of the major national chains, much worse in fact. And you'll pay more too since they have Angus beef. Some may think it's impossible to screw-up a cheeseburger, what with all that naturally built-in fat and flavor. You would be wrong to make that assertion. I ordered the standard cheeseburger and fries combo. The cheeseburger turned out to be just a burger, and nothing including the fries had one ounce of salt or seasoning. I got my order home to the sad realization that my few-and-far-between indulgences in the occasional bag of fat and flavor was clearly not in the cards for me this time. :(

Best Burger for the Buck

Really nice place to have an afternoon meal. Their deep fried onions rings and cheeseburgers are super. The people there are very nice as well.
