Silver Platters has really come along way. It's not easy to fend against the corporate conglomerates and the powers that be when your a small independent record store in a city full of music snobs and pompous penny pinching idiots who would rather throw money to a companies that employ their staff in droves of zombified broken spirited clones than to an locally owned independent music outlet in a city that should reflect just that. You know it's kind of ironic, you read the bad reviews and I laugh because the people who wrote them automatically label and stereotype themselves in to classifications of those who would rather buy their music at a Fred Meyer or Wal-Mart where the selection is limited and censored. If that's the purchaser you are then your right, you shouldn't shop at SP because your limited music knowledge and selection is better found at the gas station down the street. I for one like large selection, and knowledgeable staff (and there's nothing wrong with a little attitude at times, hasn't anyone seen Empire Records, Clerks, or High Fidelity?), and a ton of local (and hard to find) artists ranging from hip-hop to country. The important thing to realize here is that local merchants are supported by the local community, even buying music from Starbucks (limited again but still marginally local) is a better purchase than buying from companies that will eventually let a conservative conscience inflict its influence over your personal taste and tell you what you can a can't buy. And for those of you who only download your music, get out of your house! Everyone, do yourself a favor, GO TO SILVER PLATTERS, BUY SOMTHING YOU"VE NEVER HEARD OR SEEN, AND TAKE A CHANCE. Their return policy is great if you don't like it, there are plenty of resources for listening and suggestions, and if the staff smarts off, do it back, trust me they can take it.

Pros: Ton's of music and movies in all genre's and knowledgeable staff.

Cons: Somtimes pricey, but money better spent supporting the local community.

Silver Platters has really been improving their image and their service. I have never had a bad experience at any of their locations; in fact quite the opposite. I love the sound stations located throughout the store so that I can preview cds before I buy it. The stage at Northgate is a great addition to this store and I am always checking on myspace to see what the up coming bands are; and the coffee bar area gives me a place to just chill. It is apparent that the new owners have been working extremely hard to keep their stores fiercely independent (what a great tag line!!). I will always be a Silver Platters customer!!! Keep up the good work!

Pros: Rocking selection and fun people.

Cons: More locations.

... this afternoon around 3pm I call up Silver Platters and I say hey, do you guys have the new Tom Waits cd set? and the guys like "yeah, we have one or two left." i said cool because i dont want to drive over there from ballard if you dont have it... he says " i just sold one, i had a hard time finding it though." i say ok, how much is it... he says" i dont know i dont have it in front of me" (uh, didnt you just sell one?) so i say thanks, jump in the car and drive over to Ngate. (this is after seeing if sonic boom had it last night - they didnt) what the dumb f&#k didnt tell me was they were closing early. i must have gotten there within 20 minutes of talking to him... thats it, im done... no more of my business to silver platters. usually they are just rude when i shop there, this was the icing on the cake. bah. try to give my money to a local business....

Pros: i've been told its good for hard to find stuff

Cons: rude staff, overpriced

I've been going to SilverPlatters for years and have noticed a definite change in recent years. I asked one of the employees and apparently it's under new ownership which is attempting to get back to being an independent store rather than a corporate catalyst. Major changes have taken place on their website (wow, dramatic improvement!) and recently when talking with one of their employees it sounds like they may be making some changes in the near future to their stores. Here's hoping they stop looking like a warehouse and are more friendly!

Pros: Great Service, Informed Employees, Friendly

Cons: Ugly Decor, Market-Priced, In a strip mall.

I worked at the Silver Platters Southcenter store for a little over two years(2000-2002) and I still go back and buy most(but not all) of my CDs there. They have a great selection but are kind of high priced, but what can they do, they're locally owned and have to make their money some how. Ask an employee to help you find a song, artist, or album and they will. They have many resources to help you with your search.

Pros: Selection, Staff, Special Ordering

Cons: Price

They have a great selection, I will admit. You can find almost anything there. However, why pay $19 for a CD I could get for $11.99 at Best Buy? Only a good store for rarities or the Classical section.

Silver Platters is always getting such rave reviews, but I can't figure it out. It's decent but not anything really special. The CDs are very expensive and their silver platter buck (or whatever it's called) program is a complete joke. You get ONE buck for each purchase (an average CD is around 17.99). Then, when you collect something like 60 silver platter bucks (which would mean you would have to spend around $1000) you can get a free disc. OH BOY! Thanks, but I'll go to a used shop or buy my new discs at Tower or Sonic Boom on sale. I will say that if you're having a tough time finding something, especially classical or jazz, you'll probably find it here.

Pros: Large Selection

Cons: Too expensive, Bucks are a joke

Went there once, will never go back again. I could go to a used music store and get the same cd for much less.

i love the store, the staff is friendly and helpful, and they do give silver platters dollars with a purchase(i think it's $1 for every $20 spent), and the selection for obscure artists is really good, but as with every retail music store you take a hit with the price, average $18 for a new lp. they do put alot of new stuff on sale, and if you're a kexp member you get 10% off, but i found the best place to go is online. i know that doesn't support the locally owned store, so if i were to buy retail i'd go there or sonic boom.

Awsome selection, helpful employees. Have done many price comparisions, and found them often cheaper, although you can often get mainstream stuff cheaper at Worst Buy, but who wants that s-t anyhow?
