Great, cozy atmosphere but steer well clear of the food!

After spending a previous date at Bleu and just loving the style, drinks menu and sheer quirkiness of the place I felt compelled to check out Chez Gaudy for more of the same.
In many senses I wasn't let down - the decadent kitschiness of the restaurant makes for a cozy and intimate date spot with the service being attentive, sincere and fun.
However the food menu was a shambles, and when we both ordered the special (pork stuffed with mozzarella served with polenta and asparagus) it looked like some eclectic mess a student might knock together based on what was left in the cupboards. It was very poor indeed and neither of us finished our meal.
Having read other reviews about the food I wasn't completely surprised but given we both woke in the night with stomach pains I would urge others to steer clear!
Ultimately - great, quirky venue with kitsch bohemian charm. Steer well clear of the food. :-(
- Pros: Charm, service and the bohemian crowd
- Cons: Food, food and food :-(

I visited Chez Gaudy for the first time on a Saturday night a few weeks back. My girlfriend and I spotted the tiny sign sticking out from an apartment building at the corner of E Howell St and Bellevue Ave in Capitol Hill. The adventure continued as we found the entrance and wove through the restaurant to find the hostess. Our table was in the corner of a small alcove with dim red lighting, eclectic art, and a strange but fun mix of Jack Johnson, Michael Jackson, and many other mainstream artists. The menu is the perfect length with a handful of selections available each for "social boards," appetizers, main entrees and desserts. The cocktails are fantastic, and the while the wine list is somewhat limited, it fit my personal tastes anyway. I ended up ordering a fantastic flat bread pizza to start, which had pesto, kalamata olives, and parmesan. Following was an equally delicious Ete'Vita, which included a portobello mushroom in balsamic with chicken breast, goat cheese, and sauteed spinach. Even though I was full, I pushed my luck and got dessert, which turned out to be a good decision. Overall, I highly recommend the place. The service was great, and atmosphere was intimate yet fun, and the food was hard to beat. If you're looking for adventure, fun, and great food, give it a shot.
- Pros: Food, atmosphere... did I say food?
- Cons: Hard to find your way in at first
Intimate hideaway

If you live on Capital Hill and haven't eaten at Chez Gaudi yet, you probably have walked past it dozens of times - it's hidden away in the first floor of an apartment building, and the entrance is marked by a discreet sign. Do go in - you'll be rewarded with a series of intimate spaces and some unusually configured tables - uor table had a Christmas tree in the middle! Food is well prepared and reasonably priced. The wine list is a bit thin, but you'll see why - I doubt they have the storage for a more extensive selection. Service was reasonably attentive. We will definitely be back.
- Pros: setting, menu
- Cons: skimpy wine list
Fun place with OK food

We went for the Tuesday tapas night.
Great service, good atmosphere, but food...not so much. Any bottle of wine is 8 bucks...that was cool. It's definitely a perfect place for the first date; a lot activities going on, a lot of conversation pieces...you never have to experience the awkward silence.
Chez crappy? are you chez crazy?! Amazing food, atmosphere, service.

I feel the need to respond to adambomb - you left out one fairly important detail about the night you ate at the restaurant, which also just so happens to be one of the best nights to go there, it's Italian dim sum Tuesday. Which means.........there are only TWO seatings all night - one at 6:30 and one at 8:30. If you get there sometime, anytime, before the last seating, you have to leave in order to accomodate the second round for the night. That was your bad for not finding out, or choosing to acknowledge, that aspect of the evening.
During Dim Sum nights there are $5 plates and $8 bottles of wine - all you can eat and drink. They bring around trays with small plates and you can choose whatever you would like. They even come around with desserts at the end. I have gone with anywhere from 5 to 15 people and we have never consciously not choosen to eat or drink something because we were worried about money, and yet we have never paid more than $30 each (including tip) any time we have been there. So needless to say, we ate and drank whatever we wanted and it was still super reasonable. I must admit though, I have not been back since Greg, the amazing manager has left and I believe that was around September. It could very well not be QUITE as amazing as it was, but what adambomb has described is simply being asked to leave for the final seating of the best night of the week - Tuesday. Go, see for yourself why everyone else rated Chez Gaudy so well.
- Pros: ambience has it here. not to mention, the food is simply wonderful
- Cons: a bit on the small side so it can be hard to navigate to your table

DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE YOUR MONEY!
It is very ?unfortunate? the food is good here ? but the service is so repugnant it is unbelievable. I was there last night with a party of 6 ? we spent around $300 and were asked to leave within 1 and ? hours. The wait person came to our table and said that we need to leave as they ?need to turn the table? ? Did they say they mistakenly overbooked this spot? NO. Were they apologetic? NO. Did we have food and wine left? Yes. When asked if we could finish what we have we were told NO! What was that?? NO, and to top it all off ? after stating we were not finished ? we were told ?this is unfortunate?!
Chez Gaudy ? more like Chez Crappy!
- Pros: None
- Cons: Everything you can think of.

Some friends suggested the restaurant and I couldn't have been more thrilled. It's a tiny place with red lighting, paintings and items all over the walls. It's a tight squeeze but well worth it and very intimate. Our party of 4 took the suggestion of our server and got a bottle of sparkling Syrah, which was a new thing for someone who's been drinking lots of wine, it went down very quickly. We then ordered the World Famous Wasabi Grilled Cheese, which is really Bruschetta with different toppings but still good (maybe not so world famous). And we had the Flaming Goat which indeed was flaming and some of the best goat cheese I had. For the entree I took the special cannellini stuffed with spinach, mushrooms, and eggplant with mozzarella and marinera on top; also a fabulous dish. My suggestion is get the specials, they are done fresh each night with organic, just from the market ingredients, and I doubt you can go wrong. Enjoy!
- Pros: Wine choice, food, red intimate lighting
- Cons: Tight squeeze, hard to find.

Fantastic main dishes (someone complained about the pork which I've never had the guts to order), great atmosphere, friendly staff and reliable beer.
Unfortunately the bartenders are inexperienced with making a good mojito. Order a cheap beer and put more $$ down on the food.
- Pros: HIDDEN
- Cons: Becoming popular (again)
best over all

We came in to a world of bountiful food and spirits and had such a joyous time that we imediatly made reservations for the next week only to find out that they would be closed!! ARGGHHHH two weeks without this treasure chest. I only hope that this place stays quiet long enough for us locals to enjoy it. a great find, The menu is great the tuesday night special is even greater and for a quiet sunday you are divine. Don't change a thing. I've heard people complain about parking but that just means you are a good catch.
- Pros: they are very attentivr to your needs: Vegan, vegetarian and carnivore
- Cons: Parking
Good God, man!!

five stars? ha! only if each star counts as two points! a truly amorphic old-euro-style atmosphere, complete with antique-patchwork-decor and candle light, which could only evolve through passion and a love for comfort and hospitality. the Onasis platter was a virtual symphony, deeply layered and just damned delicious. Where do they shop for their wine? i want to know. just what one needs to unwind and enjoy - keep up the great work, guys! btw, it's not at all difficult to find...cheers
- Pros: everything
- Cons: none
