We hated the Austin Cantina before we ever ate there simply because it replaced one of our local favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurants, Dandelion. Boy, was our hate unfounded. I have no idea what happened to Dandelion, but the informal, friendly, Tex Mex cantina that replaced it in its formal locale, has actually managed to replace it in our hearts. The bottom line: the food is fresh, tasty, simple yet so satisfying on a variety of levels. I had the special: the pecan crusted chicken, served with a mild pickled beet, onion and carrot salad and smoky pepper mashed potatoes, and my husband had the enchilads stuffed with southwestern pork with a side of rice and beans. His guacamole was filled with bright, fresh flavor; the rice and beans were addictive and somehow not laden with the usual lard-y heaviness of this southwestern side dish. Our server was cheerful and genuinely friendly. They boast of Southern hospitality, and they deliver. Bonus: they serve alcohol! I had the drink special: a margartia made with bloo- (somehow, citysearch won't let me write the "d" on that word?) oranges. Definitely going back. Also going to try the brunch on Saturdays and Sundays 10-2. Would highly recommend to those seeking good, unpretentious Tex Mex fare.
Pros: Friendly service, good food
Cons: Not a "fine" dining experience (but who cares w/ food and service this good)
